International Junior Science Olympiad (IJSO) -Overview

The International Junior Science Olympiad (IJSO) 2023 is one of the most-anticipated competitions for young students passionate about science. It aspires to unite some of the brightest young scientists worldwide to compete, exchange knowledge and skills, and have a passion for science. The 20th edition of IJSO 2023 will be held in Thailand. Faculty of Science Srinakharinwirot University Bangkok, Thailand, will host International Junior Science Olympiad (IJSO) 2023 from 1-10 December 2023.
The competition aims to encourage young students to pursue careers in science and technology, recognise talented students in the science field, and promote science education as well as scientific awareness among young students. The Olympiad also fosters international cooperation and understanding among students. The competition is open to students nominated by their respective national science organisations and is 15 years old or younger as of the competition year.
The IJSO 2023 curriculum will encompass Physics, Chemistry, and Biology. It will assess students' knowledge and comprehension of fundamental ideas in these subjects as well as their capacity to use these ideas to solve problems.
Given the competitive nature of the IJSO 2023, participants are advised to start their preparations early and focus on building a solid foundation in all core subjects (Physics, Chemistry, and Biology). IJSO Eligibility of Science Olympiad 2023

To participate in IJSO 2023, students must meet the following eligibility criteria:
  • They must be under the age of 15 years as of December 31st, 2023.
  • They must not have completed their schooling before December 31st, 2023.
  • They must have qualified through their respective National Olympiad programs.
  • They must have obtained their school's permission to participate in the Olympiad.

IJSO Exam Pattern 2023

  • The IJSO 2023 competition has three types of tests: MCQs, theory and practical, given on three separate days.
  • The exams are usually 3-4 hours long and are conducted in English, with translations available in each country's native language.
  • The MCQ test has 30 questions, with 10 questions each from Physics, Chemistry, and Biology.
  • One mark is awarded for each correct answer, while each wrong answer carries a penalty of 0.25 marks.
  • Unanswered questions are awarded 0 marks.
