NEET 2023 Eligibility Criteria

Candidates must ensure that they meet the NEET 2023 eligibility criteria before applying for the NEET-UG exam. Otherwise, their application will be rejected. The eligibility criteria are the parameters set by authorities that candidates need to fulfil before applying & appearing for the exam. The NEET 2023 eligibility criteria define the conditions and guidelines for the exam, the qualifying exam and percentage, nationality, age limit, the number of maximum attempts, and more.

NEET 2023 Eligibility - Age Limit

Lower Age Limit: For the NEET exam, a candidate must have completed 17 years of age at the time of application or admission or will complete that age on or before 31 December of the respective year of their admission to the first year of the Undergraduate Medical Course. That means, to qualify for the lower age limit, candidates must be born on or before December 31, 2006.
Upper Age Limit: There is no upper age limit for NEET aspirants. The previous upper age limit of 25 years (30 for reserved category candidates) has been removed by NMC.

NEET 2023 Eligibility - Educational Qualification

Before applying for the NEET 2023 exam, candidates must ensure that they meet the following educational requirements.
  • Students who have passed the qualifying exam for class 12th are eligible to apply for NEET 2023.
  • Candidates must have studied Physics, Chemistry, Biology/ Biotechnology, and English in Class 12th and have passed all their subjects.
  • The fundamental qualifying exam for NEET is Class 12, but the qualifying marks vary depending on the candidate's category.
  • Candidates must fill the complete online application form with the proper NEET Qualifying Examination Code.

NEET 2023 - Qualifying Exam Codes

Candidates who wish to apply for NEET 2023 must select a qualifying examination code. The table below contains information about Codes 1 through 7.
CODE: 01 Candidates taking their Class 12 board exam in 2023 and awaiting their board results must use this code. However, until the time of admission, those candidates must have qualified for their class 12 exam as indicated above, or they will be ineligible.
CODE: 02 Aspirants who have completed the higher/senior secondary examination or the Indian School Certificate Examination (ISCE), which is equal to the Class 12 examination and preceded after a 12-year study cycle, must select this code. According to the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT), the final two years of this study must include science courses such as physics, chemistry, biology/ biotechnology, mathematics, or any other elective subject with English as a core subject. Candidates who qualified for Class 12 in 2021 or earlier and have yet to follow any other course after Class 12 must select this code.
CODE: 03 Candidates who have passed their Intermediate/ Pre-degree Examination in Science from an Indian University/Board or other recognized organization, with Physics, Chemistry, Biology/Biotechnology, and English as main subjects with a practical test in science subjects should be included in the course should select this code. In addition, candidates who have completed a state board's class 12 or equivalent qualifying examination must also select this code.
CODE: 04 Aspirants who have completed a Pre-professional/ Pre-medical Examination after passing either the Higher Secondary Examination or the Pre-University or an equivalent examination with Physics, Chemistry, Biology/ Biotechnology & English must have chosen this code while applying. Practical tests in these subjects and English as a compulsory subject must be included in the Pre-professional/Pre-medical examination.
CODE: 05 Candidates pursuing the three-year degree course from a recognized University with Physics, Chemistry, and Biology/ Biotechnology, as main subjects and have qualified in the first year, including practical tests in each of the aforementioned subjects, must choose this code. Candidates should remember that the qualifying exam here must be a University Examination. They must have passed the previous qualifying examination, 10+2, with Physics, Chemistry, Biology/ Biotechnology, and English as core subjects.
CODE: 06 Candidates who have qualified for the B.Sc. An examination from an Indian recognized University and having at least two of the subjects from Physics, Chemistry, Biology (Botany, Zoology),/ Biotechnology must select this code during the application procedure. They must also have passed the previous qualifying examination (10+2) in English, Physics, Chemistry, and Biology.
CODE: 07 Candidates who have passed any other examination equivalent to the last two years of 10+2 study (comprising Physics, Chemistry, and Biology/ Biotechnology with practical tests in these subjects) and are also considered equivalent to the Intermediate Science Examination of an Indian University/Board must select this code. Aspirants who have passed the qualifying examination in a foreign country must also select this code.

NEET 2023 Eligibility Criteria: For NRI/Foreign Students

Indian Nationals, Non-Resident Indians (NRIs), Overseas Citizens of India (OCI) & Foreign Nationals are eligible to appear in NEET (UG) - 2023. Here we present the NEET 2023 Eligibility criteria for NRI/ Foreign Students.
  • Candidates who have studied abroad and want to study medicine in India must have passed Chemistry, Physics, English, and Biology/Biotechnology with 50 per cent marks in Class XII including practical tests in the aforementioned science subject, and their equivalency is determined by the Association of Indian Universities as MCI regulations and the concerned university.
  • Candidates who completed the IB (International Baccalaureate)/ GCSE/ Advanced Placement curriculum in high school are also eligible for NEET.
  • In India, IB candidates are also eligible for NEET.
  • Foreign nationals are also eligible for admission to medical/dental colleges, according to the laws and regulations of the different state governments, institutions, and the government of India, where applicable. They should check with the relevant state medical/dental schools to ensure their eligibility.

NEET 2023 Eligibility Criteria: Number of Attempts

There are no restrictions on the number of attempts or how many times a candidate can appear for the NEET examination, provided that they fulfil the other eligibility criteria. The restrictions on the number of NEET attempts were eliminated with modifications to the NEET 2023 eligibility requirements in 2018. As a result, there is no limit to the number of NEET attempts.

NEET 2023 Eligibility Criteria: For B.Sc Nursing

Candidates seeking B.Sc nursing admission using NEET scores should review the following NTA NEET 2023 eligibility criteria:
Age: The age criteria are the same for B.Sc aspirants as well. Candidates must be 17 years old as of December 31, 2023.
Minimum Qualification: Candidates must have passed the qualifying exam for Physics, Chemistry, Biology, and English individually.
  • Candidates must have passed the qualifying exam of class 12th with a minimum aggregate score of 45%.
  • For reserved category students, the qualifying score is 40%.
  • All applicants must have English as a compulsory subject in class 12th to become eligible for NEET 2023.
  • Candidates who have completed class 12 in a State Open School recognised by NIOS in the aforementioned subjects are also eligible to take the test.
Reservation Criteria: PwD candidates will get 3% reservation.

NEET 2023 Eligibility Criteria: 15% NRI Quota

Aside from the All India Quota and the State Quota, there is also a 15% designated special quota for NRIs (Non-Indian Residents) known as the NRI Quota. MCI has set aside an NRI quota for students who live and study outside India yet are originally from the country. NRI students can easily acquire admission in these 15% reserved seats and study in Indian medical colleges via NRI Quota. The NRI Quota also includes Persons of Indian Origin (PIO)) and Overseas Citizens of India (OCI), however, they must qualify the NEET UG Exam to be considered for admission.

NEET 2023 NRI Quota Eligibility:

Candidates who fall under the following categories are eligible for the NRI quota:
  • People of Indian origin (PIO), Overseas Citizens of India (OCI), and their children come under the NRI category.
  • Students who are the children of State or Central Government workers who are on deputation in another country are considered NRIs.
  • Indian origin students who reside or study in another nation.
  • Children of Indian citizens who are studying or working overseas are also termed NRIs.
  • Candidates who were born in another country but have Indian parents.
All the above-mentioned candidates fall under the NRI category.

Conditions for NRI Quota Eligibility:

  • Students must meet the above conditions for the NRI quota.
  • Applicants must have a valid passport.
  • Only bonafide NRIs shall be assigned seats under the NRI Quota.
  • Candidates must have qualified the NEET 2023 exam.
  • Candidates applying for NRI sponsorship must be related to the financial supporter by blood, whether it be the mother, sister, father, brother, aunt, or uncle.

NEET 2023 Eligibility Criteria: 15% All India Quota (AIQ)

  • Indian Nationals, Non-Resident Indians (NRIs), Overseas Citizens of India (OCI), Persons of Indian Origin (PIO), and Foreign Nationals are all eligible for a 15% All India Quota Seat.
  • Aspirants who pass the NEET 2023 exam will be eligible for the 15% All India Quota seats, as well as 100% of the seats in Deemed Universities, Central Universities, ESIC, and AFMC. MCI will conduct this NEET counselling on an All-India basis.
  • Candidates from J&K are not eligible for the 15% All India Quota seats unless they have completed a self-declaration form, which must be submitted together with the NEET application form 2023. The self-declaration on the NEET 2023 application form indicates that the candidate desires to participate in the counselling for the 15% All India Quota seats while foregoing home state counselling. Such candidates will be eligible for seats at Deemed Universities, ESIC, and AFMC colleges based on the NEET eligibility requirements.
  • The 85% DU seats will be available to candidates who have finished Class 10 and 12 in Delhi, whilst the AMU Institutional Quota seats will be available exclusively to AMU students.

NEET 2023 Eligibility Criteria: 85% State Quota

  • The 85% state quota represents seats in all government colleges of the relevant states/union territories. The appropriate state authorities will conduct counselling for such seats. To be eligible for state quota seats, candidates must meet the NEET 2023 eligibility criteria established by each state or union territory body, which includes domicile & other criteria too.
  • Admission to private medical and dental institutes via NEET will also be subject to state/union territory policies.
