International Earth Science Olympiad Overview

International Earth Science Olympiad or IESO is an international-level olympiad focused on the Earth Science discipline. It is an annual event where several countries come together to promote studies in Earth science and allied discipline.
To participate in IESO 2023, students must have qualified the national-level olympiad organised by each country. The olympiad is conducted in January. A team of  5 members can participate in the olympiad from each country.

IESO Objective

IESO objectives are:
  • To influence students to develop an interest in Earth Science.
  • To promote the research areas in the field of Earth Science.
  • To promote healthy competition through the olympiad.
  • To help students get international-level exposure.

IESO Syllabus

  • The Geosphere and Earth Systems
    • Matter transition in and among Earth systems involves changes between reservoirs (from one form to another).
    • Earth’s matter passes in a cyclic way between the different reservoirs while changing from one form to another.
    • The energy sources that activate the “Rock Cycle” are internal energy, conserved in the crust of Earth (radio-active disintegration), and external energy – solar energy.
    • The reciprocity among the different Earth systems.
    • The formation of part of the residual rocks is tightly linked with biosphere processes.
    • Changes in the crust of Earth, whose source is internal energy, can be sharp and fast and occur on short notice (earthquakes and vulcanisation) but can be very slow (the rising of mountain ridges).
    • The changes in the Geosphere create a chain reaction in all the Earth systems, which may affect evolutionary processes in the Biosphere system.
    • The movement of plates expresses the movement of matter and energy on Earth.
    • Earthquakes and volcanic eruptions.
  • The Planetary System and Earth Systems
    • General planetary system
    • Mutual relations that exist between the Geosphere and atmosphere systems
    • The energy balance of a planet includes external energy – sun radiation, the influence of the sun’s gravitation and close planetary bodies, and internal energy – as a result of the core activity, radio-active elements and internal processes.
  • Atmosphere and Earth Systems
    • Radiation from the sun causes the warming of all of Earth’s systems.
    • Composition of the primary atmosphere of Earth
    • Mutual relations among the atmosphere with the hydrosphere (oceans), biosphere (photosynthesis and breathing) and Geosphere (gas, volcanic dust and erosion).
  •  Hydrosphere and Earth Systems
    • The direct link between geosphere and hydrosphere systems
    • Water composition and availability
    • Soil composition and influence of water on soil
    • Atmospheric phenomena and processes
    • Composition of oceans water and their physiographic structure
    • Evolution of the composition of oceanic water
    • Oceanic-origin catastrophic events like tsunamis and hurricanes
